Establishment of the Löran M-scope

Between 19 and 22 October Daniel Kraus (INTEGRATE+ project leader)  visited Löran skogen for the installation of an M-scope.

Löran skogen is situated in SCA´s new Diversity Park (Njurundakustens Mångfaldspark). The Park was officially opened on 23 June 2015 (with an Integrate+ film team present) and is stretching over an area of around 1700 ha. 70% of the area is dedicated to nature conservation activities, the remainder will be cultural heritage sites and commercial forestry.

SCA´s conservation specialist for the Medelpads District Tomas Rydkvist suggested an area where 300-400 year old pines are forming a loose layer over dense ingrowing spruce cohorts. In the surrounding stands a reduction of Norway spruce has been done last fall with a harvester. Slash had been removed in order to be able to use prescribed fire with a low intensity.

Besides the old pines there is a remarkable amount of microhabitats, especially arising from previous fire events and lightning scars. Löran skogen provides habitat for many species, including rare polypores and saproxylic insects.

As an initiation ritual, Jan Kiehne was passed the axe for artificial scarring of younger pines to increase resin impregnation. Jan was contracted to conduct all measurements in the M-scope. He has made previous M-scope experience during his MSc-thesis with Integrate+.

Jan worked on the Löran M-scope until 30 October with support from SCA staff. In total he measured dbh, heights, timber quality and ecological value of 833 trees.
