Exchange with partners on establishing Integrate+ demonstration sites in Switzerland and France; Collaboration starts with the University of Freiburg, Germany

(October - November, 2014)

Switzerland

The meeting took place with the Sihlwald Foundation and the Swiss Federal Research Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape in Switzerland to discuss the establishment of a Marteloscope site (M-scope) in a nature forest reserve. It was agreed that such a site could be used as a valuable showcase for biodiversity and close-to-nature forest management to a wider public and serve for training inventory teams in the identification of tree micro-habitats.

A second visit was conducted to the existing M-scope Goumoens in Vaude, Switzerland where a re-measuring was agreed in order to incorporate a complete evaluation of ecological aspects. This M-scope will be included in the Integrate+ network. A further visit was organized with the administration of the Parc Naturel des Vosges Nord to consult on the establishment of 2 M-scopes in ‘Foret de la Petite Pierre’ in collaboration with ONF and Reserve Naturelles des France.

Germany

A joint collaboration with the University of Freiburg (Faculty of Environment and Natural Resources, Chair of Silviculture) started in November 2014 to establish two M-scopes in the Freiburg community forest. The outcome of the project will be two Master theses including M-Scope establishment, scientific analysis and training exercises for both a montane forest and a former coppice forest dominated by oak.
