EFICENT hosted a seminar on ‘wildlife management’

21st of July 2016 in Wittnau near Freiburg, Germany

Throughout Europe wild boar populations are on the rise. The increasing numbers are resulting in high damage levels in agriculture, more and more traffic accidents and the risk for disease like African swine fever. Forests play an important role as habitat for wild boar and therefore the forest sector carries responsibility for their management.

EFI facilitated a seminar on the topic of wild boar management in cooperation with the hunting association of Freiburg and the ecological hunting association of Baden Württemberg. Niels Hahn, an explicit wild boar specialist reported on experiences in Bavaria and other regions where alternative hunting and management methods were applied.

The event was attended by 100 hunters, farmers, researchers and representatives from hunting authorities. It should be noted that it was the first event in many years where the two hunting associations operated jointly together and not against one another. EFI took up the role of facilitator in this cooperative approach. As a result, Alexander Held (EFI) was nominated to become a member of the ‘Hunting Advisory Board’ of the district Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald with a forested area of 137 833 ha).
